## More information about the Assistive Equipment Center's Ruskeasuo unit

Are you coming to the Assistive Equipment Center's Ruskeasuo unit? We have written a few instructions to help you.

### How do I become a customer of HUS Assistive Equipment Center?

---

You will need a referral either from your home municipality or from specialist medical care. We do not accept referrals from private service providers.

We will assess the referral at a meeting where we also define the urgency category of the referral. We will define urgency category 1 for assistive equipment related to rapidly progressive illnesses (such as ALS patients). Other referrals will be placed in urgency category 3. We will place the approved referrals in the appointment queue. We will send you a notification of your scheduled appointment by post.

### What kind of equipment is available to me?

---

We provide assistive equipment [in accordance with the national guidelines of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health](http://julkaisut.valtioneuvosto.fi/handle/10024/161068).

Adults: communication aids and electrical mobility aids (electric mopeds and powered wheelchairs, power assists, push assists, and stair climbers). Your municipality's assistive equipment unit will lend you other adult mobility aids (such as rolling walkers and manual wheelchairs).

Children (under 16 years of age): all assistive equipment for communication, mobility, and daily activities for long-term loans.

### How long do I have to wait to receive my assistive equipment?

---

The average queueing time varies. If you experience any changes in your status or symptoms (e.g. pain, weakening of strength, or difficulty in balance), get in touch with us. In these cases, we will re-assess the waiting time.

### I am temporarily in need of a powered wheelchair. Is that possible?

---

We only grant assistive equipment for long-term use. For temporary needs, please contact the rehabilitation counsellor in your municipality.

### Can I wish for a specific brand or model?

---

Before the handover of an assistive device, you can come for an assessment appointment, allowing you to try out and experiment with assistive equipment together with your therapist in order to maintain your essential vital and important daily activities.

Our assistive equipment are primarily used devices which have been refurbished. When purchasing new assistive equipment, we primarily use supply contract products from the competitive tendering by HUS (Act on Public Procurement and Concession Contracts 29.12.2016/1397).

### I will be moving to another hospital district and I have an electric moped. What do I need to do?

---

You can call customer service, tel. 09 4718 0520 (Mon–Fri 9:00–11:00 a.m. and 12:00–2:00 p.m.). We need to know your moving day and your new address. We will ensure that the ownership of the equipment will be transferred to the new hospital district. In the future, you can take care of the maintenance of the assistive equipment and any renewals in the assistive equipment services in your new area of residence.

### A tire burst / a screw fell off / the equipment does not work. What should I do?

---

You can call the number for maintenance appointments at 09 4717 5499 (Mon–Fri 9:00–11:00 a.m. and 12:00–2:00 p.m.). Our personnel will assess the duration of the servicing.

### The sitting position on the powered wheelchair has deteriorated. What should I do?

---

You can call our customer service, tel. 09 4718 0520 (Mon–Fri 9:00–11:00 a.m. and 12:00–2:00 p.m.). Our personnel will pass on the information for processing.

### I need to replace my powered wheelchair/electric moped. What should I do?

---

You can call our customer service, tel. 09 4718 0520 (Mon–Fri 9:00–11:00 a.m. and 12:00–2:00 p.m.). Our personnel will pass on the information for processing.

In some cases, we may also renew the equipment by order of maintenance, if spare parts for the equipment are no longer available or the equipment is already old or beyond repair. The waiting time and urgency are determined on a case-by-case basis. You will not require a new referral for the modification or replacement of your assistive equipment.

### I no longer need the assistive equipment. What should I do?

---

You can agree on the return of the assistive equipment by calling our customer service, tel. 09 4718 0520 (Mon–Fri 9:00–11:00 a.m. and 12:00–2:00 p.m.). The assistive equipment can also be returned directly to the Ruskeasuo unit, Mon–Thu 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. and Fri 8:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.

### Can I make modifications to the assistive equipment myself?

---

No modifications or repairs may be made to the assistive equipment independently. Please order all modifications or repairs on your assistive equipment by calling the number for maintenance appointments at 09 4717 5499 (Mon–Fri 9:00–11:00 a.m. and 12:00–2:00 p.m.).

### I would like to have my powered wheelchair modified by replacing the footrests with electric ones. Why will maintenance not implement the modification work in connection with a repair appointment?

---

Our maintenance only performs maintenance and repair work. If your assistive equipment requires more extensive modifications, you will always need an individual assessment of the need for modifications and their implementation from the therapist at the Assistive Equipment Center.
