  At the Pediatric Emergency Department at Hyvinkää Hospital, we deal with sudden illnesses and injuries in children aged under 16, as well as issues associated with mental health problems requiring urgent treatment.

 Please contact the emergency services of your designated health center on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. When you are seeking treatment at a hospital emergency department, call the toll-free Medical Helpline number 116117 first.

In case of emergency, such as severe shortness of breath, large bleeding wound or convulsive child, call the emergency number 112. Paramedics will assess the need for treatment and transport the patient to the correct location for treatment.

In an emergency, you can also go directly to an emergency department.

### Should I go to the emergency department?

Before coming to the emergency department, call the Medical Helpline at 116117. If you already have a referral to the emergency department, you do not need to call the Medical Helpline.

### The most common symptoms that you should always have looked at in an emergency clinic

- fever in a newborn
- convulsive child
- major injuries and bone fractures
- sudden severe headache
- difficulty breathing
- sudden onset of severe or worsening abdominal pain
- heavy bleeding
- mental health problems requiring urgent treatment
- chest pain
- stroke symptoms, such as sudden flaccidity or incapacity of a limb or speech difficulties







 



 

##   Common symptoms that do not require urgent care at an emergency department

**Headache and symptoms of a cold**

- Upper respiratory infection (with fever) when the child’s general condition is good, and they breathe with ease
- Sore throat with no general symptoms or difficulty to swallow
- Ear infection / earache
- Ear discharge with no general symptoms
- Eye infection in a child older than 3 months
- Prolonged cough
- Headache with no other symptoms

**Gastrointestinal symptoms**

- Stomach flu in a child who is in good general health and can drink
- Occasional stomach ache
- Constipation

**Allergy**

- Mild allergic reaction that is getting better
- Hay fever, stuffy nose, and eye infections during pollen season (effective over-the-counter remedies are available in pharmacies)

**Cuts, rashes, bites**

- Minor cut on the body or limbs
- Insect and tick bites
- Pimples
- Rash with no other symptoms
- Road rash, abrasion
- Sun burns, redness on skin without vesicles
- Skin reactions caused by plants
- Minor mucosal ulcers in the mouth
- Aphthous ulcers or oral thrush

**Sprains or injuries**

- Minor sprains when the child can bear weight on the limb
- Injury to the fingers or toes when the finger/toe moves normally and sensation is intact
