In the speech therapy of the Phoniatrics Outpatient Clinic in the Rubik building in Pasila, we serve both adults and children. A speech therapist’s assessment requires a referral from a physician.

In speech therapy for adults, we examine and rehabilitate voice disorders and other laryngeal symptoms, as well as eating and swallowing disorders. In speech therapy for children, our work focuses on the assessment of speech and language skills and the need for rehabilitation.

## Speech therapy for adults

---

In the speech therapy assessment of adult patients, we survey the factors that cause and maintain the patient’s symptoms associated with voice, the larynx or swallowing, as well as the need and possibilities for speech therapy. The assessment is carried out by interviewing the patient, by means of various symptom questionnaires, and by observing the patient’s activities in various tasks. Disorders related to swallowing can also be studied through imaging examinations, which we carry out together with the physician or independently.

In rehabilitative speech therapy, we aim to increase the patient’s awareness of the factors affecting their own symptoms and to increase the patient’s means of influencing the symptoms. Speech therapy usually includes instructions and exercises that the patient follows at home between appointments.

## Children's speech therapy

---

In the speech therapy assessment of pediatric patients, we survey the child’s ability to communicate, linguistic skills, speech motor skills, the need for communication methods that support and compensate speech, and, if necessary, eating functions. The assessments are based on standardized tests, observations and information we receive about the child’s immediate surroundings.

Based on the speech therapist's examinations, we assess the need, suitability and goals for rehabilitation. The planned rehabilitation will take place outside the hospital, e.g. in the form of demanding medical rehabilitation paid for by Kela.

Our AAC instructor develops and manufactures picture communication folders and other image materials, and guides and illustrates their use for families and the closest adults in the child’s everyday life.
